Maryam Eskandari

Based in Utrecht, Maryam Eskandari gives clay a profoundly human presence. With a background in poetry and storytelling, she turned to sculpture in 2000, discovering a direct language in which emotion takes physical form.

Faces, hands and full figures bear the marks of vulnerability and resilience. Her clay beings, sometimes fractured yet still standing, explore bodily freedom, self-possession and the strength to carry on. Transformed by water and fire, the material becomes a place of renewal.
